$10,000 IN GRANTS TO DEVELOP CIVIL RIGHTS TOUR
In 2011, I was awarded 3 grants, totaling $10,000 to develop a new African American Civil Rights Landmarks Tour for the IU South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center at The Natatorium. The project was developed in partnership with the Northern Regional Office of Indiana Landmarks and the Northern Indiana Center for History. Tour materials include a printed tour guide (available locally), a tour map sign placed outside the tour origination point at the Engman Natatorium, and several smaller historic site markers placed at the tour stop for each site. The three grants, totaling approximately $10,000, were awarded by the National Trust for Historic Preservation through its Partnership-in-Scholarship Fund for African American Historic Places, which is funded by the Ford Foundation and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Indiana Humanities Historic Preservation Education Program (with partial funding provided by Indiana Landmarks and the National Endowment for the Humanities) and Indiana Landmarks' African American Heritage Fund. The Civil Rights Heritage Center offers the tour as a self-guided walking/driving tour or as a guided tour for students and groups, by advance reservation. The tour is a permanent program of the Civil Rights Heritage Center, at its community location, 1040 W. Washington St. The natatorium is the oldest surviving landmark building with deep roots in the local civil rights movement between 1936 and 1950. |
